Hello, Most of my ancestors used to live in Lothringen, France, and in Saarland, Germany, but I have just discovered that one of them, Thomas REINHARD/REINHART , son of Frederick REINHARD and Ursula VEIT, was born circa 1724 very probably in Ippesheim (or maybe is it Ipsheim), two cities close to Marktbreit, Unterfranken/Mittelfranken, Bayern. I would like to know if the parish books of these two villages still exist for circa 1724 and before, and if so, where can they be studied (I mean, are they still kept in the church of the village, or at the regional archive center ?) Thanks for your help Dimitri -- ** Dimitri Komatitsch - komatits(a)seismology.harvard.edu ** ** Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences ** ** Hoffman Building Room 128 - Harvard University ** ** 20 Oxford Street Phone: (617) 496-4475 or 495-1172 ** ** Cambridge, MA 02138 Fax: (617) 495-0635 ** ** USA http://www.seismology.harvard.edu/~komatits **

Hi, According to Charles Hall's book, "The Atlantic Bridge to Germany, Vol III, Barvaria" Ippesheim.Markt has Protestant Church Records available dating back to 1651. Ipsheim.Makt has Protestant Church records available dating back to 1586. If it were me, I would try the nearest LDS Family History Center to see if they have these books on Microfilm. Good Luck, Joe Dessel

I have a copy of a record dated July 1751 in which Thomas converts from Protestant (the text says "the heresy of Luther" !) to Catholic (to be able to marry, since his wife was catholic and living in Lorraine, France) so I guess I should find the birth act in the protestant records you indicate. Thanks again Dimitri Komatitsch. -- ** Dimitri Komatitsch - komatits(a)seismology.harvard.edu ** ** Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences ** ** Hoffman Building Room 128 - Harvard University ** ** 20 Oxford Street Phone: (617) 496-4475 or 495-1172 ** ** Cambridge, MA 02138 Fax: (617) 495-0635 ** ** USA http://www.seismology.harvard.edu/~komatits **

I am planning a research trip to Germany this fall. I had family in Bad Bruckenau, Willmars, Oberelsbach, Geroda, Schondra, Poppenlauer, Kleinbardorf, and Frankfurt near Markt Taschendorf. I plan to visit these towns and cemeteries, and I would also like to search for vital records. I expect that at least some of the records are in the Staatsarchiv Wurzburg. (The family was Jewish, so that may complicate finding records.) Does anyone have any experience using the archives in Wurzburg or other areas of Mittelfranken or Unterfranken, or with transportation in these areas? I would appreciate any advice about my trip! Thanks!

Hi, I am searching the roots of my family name "Federschmidt" (sometimes written as "Federschmid", "Federschied" or similar). As I know from my research so far, all families with this name (and there are quite a few living in Germany now, even some in the USA!) seem to have come one time from a very limited area in Franken, close to the city Gunzenhausen. Now I am very curious about the real origin of this name! Is there anybody out there, interested in the history of this name and in the results of my research? Has anybody further information? Thanks for replies! Karl
