|    This page is dedicated to the captains and seamen of the refugee ships
|    who saved millions of German lives. It is also a memorial to the
|    thousands upon thousands of German lives lost while fleeing from the
|    Russian invasion between the end of January 1945 and the middle of
|    March 1945.
|    I thank the German artist Klaus-Rainer Forst for letting me show
|    photos of his oil paintings on this page. Klaus-Rainer Forst has made
|    it his life's ambition to paint the refugee ships.

|    (14660 BRT) was torpedoed and sank on February 2, 1945 near Stolpebank
|                     - about 2,700 drowned in the Baltic.

|                              "Wilhelm Gustloff"
|
|     hit by a Russian torpedo and sank on January 30, 1945. Some say that
|    5,100 of the 10,000 refugees on board drowned in the icy waters of the
|     Baltic. Others state that 9,300 lost their lives. The sinking of the
|        Wilhelm Gustloff is the greatest maritime disaster on record."
