Hallo Werner and Ronald, For a dutchman it may be easier to find out what is meant. The Speck makes me think of a pig, Ferkel, or in dutch: varken (the r is sometimes pronounced in the back of the throat instead of with the tip of the tongue); staken is from stechen, or dutch steken, english: cut. My interpretation: Ferkel stechen, mitten im Ferkel, (dann) hast du Speck und was zu säugen. Or in english: Cut (from) the pig in the middle (of its back) And you have something to suck. Regards, Frans C. I asked also Low German experts, without success. I will ask somer others again. What I can interpret is this: Faken staken midden in'ne weeken (Often sting in the middle of the week) Has Du Speck un wat to seggen (Have you bacon and what you say?) But this make not sense. I let you know, Werner Honkomp > As a child, my Father used to sit me on his lap and recite a little ditty > which ended when he tickled me. Since I did not speak German, I never > did > learn the correct words. He learned it from his Grandfather who came > from Oythe, > amt Vechta. > I remember some of the words phonetically, but they are gibberish. I > hope > someone has heard and remembers the ditty and can tell me the entire > ditty. > The part I remeber sounded like: > Facun stacken miden in the vacun > Hast du speck und was du sagen. > Oink! Oink! Oink! > Thanks, > Ronald J Repking > Flossmoor, IL Oldenburg-L mailing list Oldenburg-L(a)genealogy.net http://list.genealogy.net/mailman/listinfo/oldenburg-l
