Lisa,

  I found a J. H. Niemeyer, age 21, from Merzen, on the ship J H Adams which
arrived at New Orleans on 16 Jun 1841. He was accompanied by
Adelheid Niemeyer, age 24, from Merzen. It is likely his wife who may have
died shortly after arriving (happened several times in my family) or it could be
a sister too. If you have an exact date of birth, you could check against the
baptismal records for that town. Did his marriage record from 1846 possibly
note being a widower - although they didn't always note that.

If you go to www.google.com and click on maps and type in Merzen you will
see that it is situated around the area where the Kingdom of Hannover and Oldenburg
  were located.
