Hi Marilyn.
I think you will be very lucky indeed to find records from the 1600's, the "German nation" did not make civil record keeping compulsory until around the mid 1800's.I have to say even then a lot of the "Obligation of law" was very spasmodic, country wide.

Most Churches up until that time often only recorded "Baptism's" to show the various higher Church officials(Bishops) the Pastors/Ministers/Priests, were in fact doing a good job in bringing the heathens to Christianity, not many recorded the parent's data or even the birth date of the convert. There were some exception, although very few. One exception that may give you some data was the records kept by "Properties/farms/Villages" of able bodied men , eligible for service in the army or for the service of the local "Royalty". These records are sometimes found in the state archives in various regions, however they are rare, as most regions were Governed as Dukedoms or Principalities or even still tribal as in villages? One other record that may assist you was the Tax records for property owners, again these may be found in some state archives, however unless you ancestor was a property owner these will not assist.
I scored a record that was from left field in searching for some data, the local School still existed & had records dating back to the late fifteen hundreds. I do not think that this one is usual in any way, just lucky for once as the town records did not start till 1720!

Kindest regards Bill HINTE

Hello!

I have just learned that my 6-great grandfather went to Remels from
Moorriem, which is near Elsfreth.

Would Moorriem/Elsfreth be part of Oldenburg? And, if so, how far back
would the records for that place go? My ancestor was born in the late
1600s.

Thank you kindly,
Marilyn in Wisconsin
