Hi,

I am looking to better understand where I came from on my fathers side. I never knew my grandfather as he divorced my grandmother before my father was born but I am still trying to trace the Künnemann name that I was given through him. My mother has done the following detective work from ship manifests and feels she has the right individuals.

Here is what she found:

"Did some more looking at ship manifests. I'm sure that I found the right ones. When they came to America, they came on different ships. William Kueneman (then it was spelled Wilhelm Kunnemann) arrived on June 30, 1909 on the ship Kronprinz Wilhelm. His wife, Helen, (then Helene) arrived on Aug 24, 1909, on the ship Grosser Kurfurst. He was born in Ostinburg, Germany in 1874 . She was born in Oldenburg Germany in in 1882. They had lived in Osternburg, Germany, at the time they came over here.

Their son, Herman George, (ships record shows him as George) arrived on Apr 21, 1911. He was born in Oldenburg, Germany. It states that he was coming to stay with his father, Wilhelm Kunnemann. He arrived on the ship Rhein.

I cannot find where Henrietta came into all this, but I will keep looking. She was not even on the US census until 1920, and she was born in 1906. So she could have come over anytime between 1909 and 1920.

Apparently, when they came here, Helen's (Helene) father was already here. His name looks like Herm Grissom. "

On looking at the data base on www.genealogienetz.de I have found a Wilhelmine Künnemann who I believe had a brother by the name of "Hermann" Ludwig not a son. Also the data base shows them going to Columbus Nebraska.

A quick bit of detective work on my own (without paying the fee :-) ) show there was a Wilhelmine AND a Wilhelm with the first arriving in Baltimore and the latter in NYC. So they are not the same.

Wilhelm would have been my great-great-grandfather and Herman my great grandfather. My grandfather and father were born in the States.

Does anyone have any ideas for me?

I am trying to understand the difference between Osternburg and Oldenburg. They seem interchangeable in some searches. Also Ostinburg must have been a mistake on the manifest and should have been Osternburg, agreed?

Thanks,
Jim Kueneman
