Is there a possibility that Saltzwald could be Salzwedel as shown in the telephone book? Salzwedel is about 70-80 miles from Salzgitter.

   I don't find a village in the Salzgitter area. I found this:

The area of the City of Salzgitter consists of 31 quarters (often called
villages): Bad, Barum, Beddingen, Beinum, Bleckenstedt, Bruchmachtersen,
Calbecht, Drütte, Engelnstedt, Engerode, Flachstöckheim, Gebhardshagen,
Gitter, Groß Mahner, Hallendorf, Heerte, Hohenrode, Immendorf, Lebenstedt,
Lesse, Lichtenberg, Lobmachtersen, Ohlendorf, Osterlinde, Reppner,
Ringelheim, Salder, Sauingen, Thiede, Üfingen, Watenstedt.

Old records can be misleading unfortunately.

Hello,

    Perhaps you could contact the Dörge name in the German Telephone book.
I
looked up the town of Uefingen and the name Dörge. There are two listings
there under Salzgitter which is the region where Uefingen is.  You could
write to that address or call (if you can speak German - or just try it
with
English). There are actually 500+ Dörge names in the phone book.

   The LDS has some stuff on Uefingen, but it all goes back farther than
than what would include your family. It is a small village. My detailed
German atlas shows many, many small towns in that area.

   There are quite a few people with the name of Brandes in the Salzgitter
area. Check it out here:

    You can find some Dörge names there as well. Just use the name alone.
