Carolyn,

    There are so many Brüggemann - Bruggemann,- Brueggemann.  First name is
Bernard (Bernhard, Berend) and second is Heinrich, Henry, Henrich.

Here are the questions:
What was he usually called?
What is his name on official papers (if you have such a thing)
Are you sure of that he arrived before 1844?
When, where, and who did he marry?

  I think you may have to do more research here in the U.S.  The name is
quite common that you can't be sure which one is your ancestor. That name of
Bernard is very prevalent in the Emsland area. In genealogy work, it is you
may have a very common name that you really have to separate to find the
right one.  Or an usual name that hardly anyone has heard of! Which is
worse?!

 I have access to the U.S. Census at home through the public library.
Heritage Quest online. Not all libraries have it. It's free. Ask me and I
can look something up.

About the Brueggemann from Glandorf - you should try to see films from a LDS
center where you live. They are Catholic church records - does that fit? Are
you near a LDS center?

  Where did Bernard live in the U.S.?  Look  at all the Brueggemanns on the
LDS site.
