I was speaking of immigrants in general.  The Germans, as a rule, had easy
names and theirs didn't get changed so much.  If the Manifest was in a
language the immigration official couldn't read, then names were changed,
for example the Russians, Polish, most of the slavics especially if the
immigrants couldn't speak English.  That's why there are so many Smith and
Jones.  Where did I get this info?  I have been to the Statue of Liberty at
least 15 times and heard this each time I went.  Also, I have spoken to many
people whose ancestors came through Ellis Island and they told me how their
names were changes.  Heide
