Maybe this will help you. Re Knuppel - when they came to the US, the
probably dropped the umlaut which many people did or they spelled it ue.
You have to check under all three. Odelebfin is so terribly misspelled.
The ending is not German, more Skandinavian. It also could be spelled Oe.
In German it just doesn't make any sense. The name Schroder has the same
problem as Knuppel. It should be spelled Schro(umlaut) or Schroe or in the
US they just used Schroder. Hope this helped. Heide

Subject: [HN] KNUPPEL from Odelebfin, Hannover?

I have a few questions and will begin with some basic information to put my
questions in context.

I have found a Sophie Dorothea Christiana KNUPPEL Born 02 Sep 1814 in
Odelebfin, Hannover. Her husband was Heinrich Christian Ludewieg SCHRODER
who was Born 10 Mar 1809 in Eschershausen amt Uslar, Hannover. They
immigrated to Dallas Township, Marion County, Iowa, United States in 1854
and remained there until their deaths.

  1) I am having trouble finding any one else with a surname of KNUPPEL.
Does anyone know is this is simply an unusual surname or is it more likely a
misspelling of a different surname? If it's likely to be a different
spelling, what suggestions do you have as to what the surname might have
been?

  2) Has anyone ever heard of a place named "Odelebfin"? I cannot find it
any gazetteers, maps, internet sites, etc. I assume it is probably a
misspelling, but I have no idea what the intended town name may have been (I
found this mention of the town the St. Paul's Lutheran Church records from
Dallas, Marion, Iowa, United States. The congregation was almost entirely of
German descent and some records used German as well as English). Any
thoughts as to what town might have been the actual place of birth would be
greatly appreciated. I would imagine it would be near Eschershausen in
Uslar, Hannover since her husband and children were all born there and it
would be unlikely that she traveled much as a young lady in the early
1800's.

  3) Is anyone else researching SCHRODERs or KNUPPELs or know of any
sources, sites, or books that might be of help? Same thing for the town of
Eschershausen. I am looking at the Civil Registers for Uslar and have
ordered the Lutheran Church records for Uslar as well.

  Thanks for your help!

  -Christine
